What is 3D Secure?

On the quest to fight against online fraud, online retailers are now implementing 3D secure technologies, which offer extra protection for both merchants and customers. It is a security protocol that was designed to provide additional security for online credit card and debit transactions. This extra security was created and designed by MasterCard and Visa,and it’s named “MasterCard Secure Code” and “Verified By Visa” respectively.

How Does 3D Secure Work?

The name 3D was coined from the three-domain model used to design this security protocol. The three domains are;

  • Acquired Domain: The merchant and the bank receiving the payment.
  • Issuer Domain:The bank that issued the credit card or debit card used to make the payment.
  • Interoperability Domain: The technology designed for the card, which will be used to support the 3D Secure.

 

As a merchant, when you have 3D Secure enabled on your website, and your customer also uses a 3D Secure card, the process goes thus;

  1. After the checkout process on your page has been completed, customers paying with their MasterCard or Visa are prompted to enter their MasterCard Secure Code” and “Verified By Visa.”
  2. The customer will then be redirected to the issuer’s website for authorization, or the approval might be completed within your website’s payment solution.
  3. The customer will get a response to know whether the transaction was successful or not.
